Annual Urban Aboriginal Childrens Back to School Backpack Program
VAFCS partners with local organizations to offer children and youth in our community, from Kindergarten to Grade 12, a "Back to School Backpack Luncheon.” The need for such a program is apparent by the growth in the number of children who come out each year to receive a backpack to start their new school year.
Many organizations have supported this event which has helped make it a pro-education, community-building celebration for the entire family to enjoy. Culture is a big part of this event, with an elder providing an opening prayer, and traditional dance group performances to bless the children, youth, families and the communities who gather to celebrate the importance of education. There is also an open mic opportunity for people to share words of encouragement to all of the students.
This half-day event helps to alleviate the financial hardship some families experience in the urban Aboriginal community and it is also a great opportunity to get the students excited about their return to school. Students get to start the school year on a positive note with their family and community's support.
