BACK TO SCHOOL BACKPACK

Annual Urban Aboriginal Childrens Back to School Backpack Program

VAFCS partners with local organizations to offer children and youth from Kindergarten to Grade twelve (12) in our community a "back to school backpack program". The need for such a program is made apparent by the relative growth in the number of children who come out each year to receive a backpack to start their new school year. Many organizations have supported this event which has helped make this a community building event, a pro-education celebration for the entire family to enjoy. Culture is a big part of this event, with an elder providing an opening prayer, and traditional dance group performances to bless the children, youth, families and the communities who gather to celebrate the importance of education.

There is also an open mic opportunity for people to share words of encouragement to all of the students. This half day event helps alleviate the financial hardship some families experience in the urban Aboriginal community. This also is an opportunity to get the students excited about their return to school year and start on a positive note with their family and community's support.
