Annual Urban Aboriginal Childrens Back to School Backpack Program

Each year VAFCS has been partnering with local organizations to offer children and youth a celebration luncheon for K to 12 students returning to school.

With school supplies and other related costs on the rise, this half-day event helps to alleviate some of the financial burden and stress on local families by offering a day of food, fun, and full backpacks. The need for such a program is apparent by the growth in registration numbers every year, and with this pro-learning, positivity-fueled festivity – students get to celebrate their educational journeys with family, culture, and community support.

Many organizations have supported this annual event which has helped to enable hundreds of students to start their school years off successfully.

Each event begins with an elder providing an opening prayer, which creates an important cultural atmosphere for young people of all ages. Traditional dance group performances bless the children, youth, families and the communities who gather to celebrate the importance of spirit, culture, and education. Memorably, there is also an open mic opportunity for community members to share words of encouragement and positivity to all of the students in attendance.
