our history

The VANCOUVER ABORIGINAL FRIENDSHIP CENTRE SOCIETY was founded in 1954 as the Coqualeetza Fellowship Club. The organization was created by a group of dedicated individuals, including Mabel Stanley, Hattie Ferguson, Chief Gertrude Guerin, Judge Alfred Scow, Margaret White, Senator Guy Williams, and Chief Simon Baker, to provide support and resources for Indigenous peoples living in Vancouver, British Columbia, and other parts of Canada.

In 1963, the organization officially incorporated under the name of the Vancouver Indian Centre Society. Over the years, the VAFCS has continued to expand and grow in response to the needs of the Indigenous community. In 1970, the organization relocated to a larger facility at 1855 Vine St, where it continued to serve the community until 1979.

Following a demographic survey of Vancouver, which revealed a concentration of Indigenous peoples between Cambie and Nanaimo Streets from 41st Avenue north to the waterfront, the VAFCS directors implemented a relocation plan. In 1979, the organization acquired a new location at 1607 East Hastings Street, which remains its current location.
