Call For Indigenous Artists

The Vancouver Aboriginal Violence Prevention Program (VAVPP) is seeking an Indigenous artist to create a cover and a design element for a series of 3 informational brochures. The same 2 pieces will be used for each brochure.

Background

The VAVPP is working to build community knowledge, resources, and services around gender-based violence (GBV). One of our projects is a series of informational brochures, the topics of which are: an information guide on understanding GBV, a guide on creating a safety plan to increase safety for those who are living in violent situations, and a resource guide that includesVAFCS and other Vancouver-based services for those fleeing family violence.

Please note that these brochures include information about violence and abuse, including examples of physical, sexual, and emotional violence. Applicants should be prepared to read introductory-level educational materials about these topics.

Cover and Design Element

The VAVPP is seeking an Indigenous artist to design:

  • Cover art that will be used for 3 brochures. There is no restriction around the choice of medium, however the piece must be able to be digitally scanned and used for PDF and printed versions of the brochures.
  • A design element to include on the inner page of 3 brochures. This will be used as a background and will have text overtop of it. This should also be able to be digitally scanned and used for both PDF and printed brochures.
  • Both pieces should be relevant to the topics of all 3 brochures.

Themes to consider in the creation of these pieces are:

Hope

Empowerment

Resilience

Community

The selected artist will be required to meet with the VAVPP team to discuss potential designs and thereafter remain in communication with the team about drafts and progress. The selected artist will also be provided with drafts of the brochures to aid them in their process.

Compensation:

The artist will be compensated $1000 for the cover art and design element.

All applicants will be informed when an artist has been selected. The VAVPP deeply appreciates all submissions. Please reach out with any questions to the Research Coordinator at researchcoordinator@vafcs.org.

Submission Requirements:

Interested artists are asked to send the following materials to the Research Coordinator at researchcoordinator@vafcs.org with the subject line “VAVPP Call for Artists”:

  • An initial draft image or digital rendering of the proposed cover artwork only (the smaller design element is not needed at this stage)

  • A statement of interest (approx. 200 words)

  • A short bio including community affiliation

  • A portfolio of works representative of the artist’s style (up to 5 pieces)  The artist can optionally include relevant social media accounts or websites in addition to their portfolio

  • Contact information including the artist’s name, area of residence, and email address.

All Indigenous artists are invited to apply! We strongly encourage women and 2SLGBTQ+ people to apply; artists of marginalized genders will be prioritized for this opportunity as these groups are most likely to be accessing the VAVPP’s brochures. The team is also prioritizing collaborations with local artists.

Email VAVPP

Timeline:

Submissions due: September 19th

Selection decision: September 26th

Deadline for completion of pieces: October 24th
