The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society offers a comprehensive Employment, Life Skills and Training (ELST) program, open to anyone who self-identify/self-declare as First Nation, Metis or Inuit.
This program offers all services at no cost to participants and these include skills and certification trainings, food, working gear, computer and transportation supports during the training, along with various workshops on career counselling, resume and cover letter writing, job searching, financial literacy and days of indigenous cultural practices.
Graduates of the program receive a free computer for completing the program. Courses are delivered in-person on Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Center premises, either one-one-one or in groups, and anyone may join the program at anytime.
We will be offering the following short term trainings this May/June: Food Safe, First Aid, Selling-It-Right / Serving-It-Right, Mental Health First Aid and Financial Wellness.
Seats for any trainings are limited and anyone interested in one or more of these trainings are asked to email me, Luc Desrochers, at employment@vafcs.org to arrange for a short in-person registration meeting (at least one week prior to the start date of the training, at 1660 East Hastings Street (across from the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Society Centre). A seat confirmation for the course will be sent to the participant after the registration meeting.

This is an 8 (eight) hour course provided on Thursday.
FOODSAFE Level 1 course is mandatory for food service establishment operators and at least one employee on every shift in British Columbia, as per BC’s Food Premises Regulation. This food safety certificate course is ideal for chefs, cooks, servers, dishwashers, bussers, deli workers, and anyone involved in food handling, preparation, or storage in restaurants, cafes, daycares, hotels, and care facilities.
FOODSAFE Level 1 course covers essential food safety practices to prevent foodborne illnesses – to keep your food safe – such as understanding the food temperature Danger Zone and cross-contamination prevention. Topics include how microbes can cause food poisoning, safe receiving, storing, cooking, cooling, thawing, cold-holding, reheating, hot-holding, serving foods, personal hygiene, and the cleaning and sanitizing of dishes, surfaces, and equipment.
This is a 4 (four) hour course provided on Tuesday morning (with Selling It Right in the afternoon).
This course is designed for people working in tourism and hospitality that require a Serving It Right certificate. Participants find ways to keep customers and the public safe while allowing them to enjoy the benefits and pleasures that good food and drink can bring. It is designed to encourage a responsible, caring, and professional approach to the serving of alcohol.

This is a 4 (four) hour course provided on Tuesday afternoon (with Serving It Right in the morning).
Cannabis is regulated by the federal and provincial governments to protect public safety and serve the public interest. Selling It Right certification is required for anyone involved in the sale of non-medical cannabis in British Columbia. It is designed to help make sure that the sale of non-medical cannabis is done lawfully and keeps patrons, staff and others safe from cannabis-related harms. The course explains why and how cannabis is regulated and provides effective techniques related to the sale of cannabis.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training provides the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to support a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being, a mental health or substance use crisis until professional help is available. The practical skills of MHFA help you develop the confidence and peace of mind knowing you can support those around you, and your ability to self-care and prioritize your well-being while supporting others.
This is a 2 (two) hour course provide on Thursday.
The financial wellness workshop is about basic money management. In this shop we talk about the importance of knowing what our own values are in this time of social media and talk about some of the challenges faced in this generation. The workshop aims as creating a plan for personal incomes and expenses = budget, to consider a dream or long term goal planning that would involve money, the difference between credit and debt, possible ways of creating an emergency fund and the importance of filing taxes.
