Introducing the VAFCS Vancouver Indigenous Youth Council. Dedicated to giving back to the community that has nurtured us into the individuals and role models we are today. Our mission is to amplify youth voices, ensuring they have a significant role in shaping our collective future. We create and support programs that foster youth engagement, providing opportunities for our young people to actively contribute to and grow within our community. By cultivating an environment that promotes excellence and empowerment, we strive to inspire the next generation of Indigenous leaders.
Daughter of WiiGaak, Samantha, was born and raised in xʷməθkʷəy̓əm territory, but carries a rich heritage from Gitxsan First Nations and the Philippines. Currently majoring in Psychology and minoring in First Nations and indigenous Studies at UBC, she is passionate about integrating cultural approaches to mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. As the Co-youth representative and president of the Vancouver Indigenous Youth Council (VIYC) at the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS), Sam demonstrates authenticity and compassion, fostering genuine connections with fellow youth. She creates meaningful interactions, aiming to give back to the community that raised her by providing a voice for the youth. Working on creating more space for youth contribution and resources, to ensure our ability to thrive.
Omer Tarik Eric Yucesoy has been immersed in the Friendship Centre movement for nearly 18 years. Serving as the youth representative on the board of directors for three years. Omer's journey began from his upbringing just across the street on East Pender. His involvement started at a young age, progressing from joining the after-school program to volunteering in the Rec program, to eventually working for the Friendship Centre. At the age of 18, Tami and Susan encouraged him to take on the role of youth representative, an initially hesitant decision that evolved into one of the most fulfilling experiences of his life. Omer views giving back to the community that nurtured him as a paramount responsibility in his position within the friendship centre.
